Peripheral Vascular Disease Animal Models & CRO Services - Preclinical Drug Development, Cardiac Disease - Blockage of peripheral arteries. Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) refers to blockage of peripheral arteries supplying the lower extremities, resulting in leg pain and cramping with walking. PVD arises from the process of atherosclerosis that is also the general cause of myocardial infarction (MI, “heart attack”) and stroke. Biotrofix is experienced in rodent models of PVD, esp. unilateral ligation of the femoral artery in rats and mice. Endpoints of these studies include blood flow (laser Doppler flowmetry) and functional status in ischemic limbs.
